iPad 2 not being retina is not a good example when talking about desktops. First, there are no battery issues to deal with for a desktop. Second, there heat issues but less so since the screen isn't held in your hand. And third, you can raise costs if you are talking about a high end screen to attach to your high end Mac Pro. Apple can target the "money is no object crowd" with some of its offerings. Apple sells $1,000 displays already and I'm not sure that they couldn't sell a $2,000 retina level display. I'd consider it. Yeah it would be a lot of money but I would expect the screen to last five years and I use my computer everyday. Would I spend about a dollar a day to have retina on a 27" screen? I'd at least consider it.

That said, I don't know if the technology is there yet. Could a current Mac Pro run a retina screen without a hiccup? I'd still 60 FPS on Crysis. :p

what makes you think that you can copy it to a USB drive or disc? I have disc for Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard. None of those disc can be copied, some of them can only be used on their original machine (or the exact model). the past 3 OSes can't be copied, and so far there's nothing to suggest we can just make backup copies of Lion.

    Oh really? (http://www.walterjessen.com/make-a-bootable-backup-snow-leopard-install-disc/)

As an aside: The disks that only work with one computer are the ones that ship with new macs. No upgrade* disks sold in the Apple Store have that restriction, and there's no reason to assume the mac app store would be any different.

*The "upgrade" disks are full installs, but since the only legal way to install OSX is to install it on a mac that already came with a version of OSX, all standalone disks are technically upgrades.

The Apple iPhone would have to be better in functionality than a Blackberry to be considered useful, unless they can work out a better input device method or utilize Microsoft's Vista speech recognition program.

Maybe not at WWDC, but I don't see them waiting till Fall to put out new iPhone hardware, hold iOS5 till then, maybe, but not new hardware.

They risk losing people to Android, WebOS, etc... as the remaining iPhone3GS people all start coming off of contract, and nobody will go iPhone4 knowing 5 is just months away.

This waiting around also gives 3GS users a few months to check out other products (new Pre w/WebOS, etc). Apple does not want people looking around during that break time.

I just upgraded to a (2011) 13" MBP and I'm still trying to get a 32 GB iPad 2 (Wi-Fi only) as my first iOS device. I'm giving my old (2010) 13" MBP to a friend.

But later this year, when my mortgage is paid off, I might spring for my first iPhone (although i'm still concerned the small screen may be unmanageable for me... due to vision issues which may, or may not, be resolved later this year).

Also, when my mortgage is paid off, I'll consider getting a MobileMe account and next year perhaps a 128 GB iPad 3 (Wi-Fi + LTE/G3 GSM). If I get that iPad 3, I'll give my old iPad 2 to a friend.

But all this is a matter of treating myself to toys that I do not really need. First I need to focus on financial fundamentals like paying off my mortgage.

Sounds like you need to pay off your mortgage.

I urge anyone who is a regular Macrumors reader to ignore anyone labeled as Newbie in threads/discussions on this tracking/location issue. Most are trolls.

I was one of the more vocal advocates on these threads way back when in the early days of the antennagate fiasco and the sheer number of trolls were mind-numbing. Of course they all went away into their trolldom caves, but some are showing their trollish faces again.

Another tip: best way to ignore trolls is to not feed them.

Rather ironic how your entire post is not constructive to the argument, and is merely troll-baiting.

    You're a n00b to me; I have 2 years on you.

Alright, i am getting bored of listening to my beard growing, so i'll go ahead:

R1T1: Loras group explores the start room.

with raven's latest explanation of the trap rule, there is no significant difference between explore-move and move-explore, and i decided to be conservative in case the jokesters upstairs put a trap right away at the start.

at level one we are very weak and any encounter with a trap or lowest-level monster means certain death for at least one of us. we need to uplevel asap.

    Splain please.

If they were going to call it the 4G, they'd have to include LTE capabilities, and all rumours so far suggest they won't.

It could include HSPA+ capabilities (which, really, will be the 4G standard until LTE is rolled out in most locations, but iPhone 6 will be out when that is the case regardless of what carrier you're on).

Obviously, Verizon customers would be SOL if HSPA+ was the only 4G option since there's no similar technology for the VZW network.

Now THAT's what I would like:

"Since the release of the 15 inch MacBook Pro in January, speculation on the forthcoming Apple laptops is spreading throughout the net. Meanwhile, MacosXrumors has received a very unexpected report, providing information about one of the forthcoming MacBook Pros.

The sources that can be qualified as very reliable (yes you read it well), are claiming that Apple plans to keep similar display size for its entry level Mac Book Pro by releasing what sources called an ultra-thin 12 inch Mac Book Pro."

    Source: www.macosxrumors.com

I would buy one on the same day.
Thats some optimistic reading mister. Not VERY reliable, just reliable. And the report is not connected to the newest rumor, it's something they heard about earlier this year and they're unable to confirm that it applies to the 25th. Oh well, maybe you read another article than me?

Apple would probably find other suppliers of those components, so I doubt not having Samsung as a supplier would kill Apple.

On the other hand, if they have to go to multiple manufacturers for the components instead of one big supplier (like Samsung), I would expect them to pay higher costs for parts. This would result in the costs being passed down the consumer.

Samsung is the biggest supplier of RAM, flash memory and LCD panels in the World (by far). There is no way Apple could live without them.

In what would likely be a major surprise to many Apple followers, The Loop's Jim Dalrymple reports (http://www.loopinsight.com/2011/03/28/no-iphone-ipad-or-mac-hardware-coming-at-wwdc/) that Apple is not planning to introduce any new hardware at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, scheduled (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/28/wwdc-2011-set-for-june-6th-10th/) for June 6th through 10th. The conference has been consistently used to introduce new iPhone hardware over the last several years, with the company occasionally introducing other hardware as well.Apple closed the door this morning on any speculation that it would announce new hardware at its Worldwide Developers conference saying it would focus on iOS and Mac OS.

Apple's apparent focus on software in its WWDC announcement backs up what my own sources are saying about the annual conference. That is, expect a software show in not a hardware event. While a focus on software is not unusual for Apple's WWDC promotional materials given its primary positioning as an event for developers, Dalrymple notes that the 2011 materials do nothing to contradict what he has already been hearing from sources: namely, no new hardware this year.

It is also important to note that Dalrymple has not specifically claimed that new iPhone hardware won't be introduced in the same general timeframe as WWDC, merely claiming that any introduction won't occur at the event itself.

One analyst report (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/22/no-fifth-generation-iphone-launch-until-september/) from late last month indicated that a September launch for the fifth-generation iPhone seemed to be the likely scenario. Those rumors were turned into claims of "delays" that were refuted (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/22/rumors-of-iphone-5-ipad-2-delays-called-untrue/) by Dalrymple himself and other sources. The difference may have been in semantics, however, as Dalrymple simply noted at the time that Apple had not deviated from its own internal release schedule plans, but whether those plans called for a typical June release or something more in line with the September rumors or even something else entirely was unknown.

Ah yes can we have a decent source please not that ridiculous piece of ill conceived drivel that is the Daily Mail.

It seems legitimate enough... Although the reality of that story is Apple chose to pay some guy who was down on his luck and he lost some patents to public domain a bit of change and a trip to California as opposed to potentially have to pay Burst millions and 10s of millions of dollars or even more on their patent claims.

Was a pretty good move on Apple's part.

In every release of Mac OS X, there have been a separate client & server editions, so this is nothing new. Not sure why Apple bundled the 2 together for preview 1.

Yeah but one of the features of Lion is server will be included with it, so it makes sense that they ultimately be bundled.

There could be a few reasons for the database.

iAds - while Apple don't receive any information now, who knows if they may have intended to down the road for targeted iAds based on location. This point is pure speculation and not accusation.

Device Upgrades - Have the database collect info on your current device, copy it to iTunes as part of the backup and dump it on a new device (Say you bought an iPhone 4 coming from a 3GS) Now the iPhone 4 knows what you're 3GS already did, so the new device is as 'smart' as the old one. Makes for a more seamless transition.

They don't have to do squat really. They can just call it the iPhone 5 and people would still buy it if it only had a slightly better camera in it.

Well exactly the 3G > 3GS update was minor so the 4/5 will be too.

Anybody expecting a total redesign in Iphone 5 may feel let down. Many people prefer the Iphone 4 design and I'd rather not see them go back to the older design.

i'm digging this idea! i love macs, home cinema and home automation! the one thing is i feel that the screen should be at least macbook size, although the 8" from previous rumours may be a tad small, although i think i'm already sold...

Yes, if the screen was some tiny affair it wouldn't be nearly as useful. I say at least 10" or so minimum.

I am using the Barely There case mate. I got the case that is slightly rubberized as the smooth ones I thought would get very fingerprinted and be slippery.

In the not too distant future we will be getting convertible iMac's. You have all seen the patents that Apple have applied for, where the screen tilts into a more horizontal position on your desk and is usable as a touch screen device.

When in this mode the screen will be a lot closer to your eyes and would greatly benefit from being higher resolution

That really is such a bad idea :(

Can you imagine the terrible usability in having a screen tilted on it's back and having to lift our arms up to do finger painting.

Who wants to cover their display with their hands?

Honestly, I hope Toyota tells Apple to stuff it.

Lame. You can be sure Toyota will capitulate to the Apple strong arm.

Not surprised! Toyota should not take it!

    +++

I love Apple for many reasons, but I also have a hard time with some of their ideology.

    Don't give in Toyota!

Its our devices, and if we want to modify them for our own use, so be it.

Does anyone read the stories before commenting on them anymore?

You didn't even need to click to read the full story.

Toyota had agreed to do so to "maintain their good relationship with Apple," our Velti contact told me on the phone.

To be fair, I think you are thinking of MacOSRumors (MOSR), not MacOSXRumors. The former have a terrible record in regards to rumours (ie they make up everything), while the latter seem to be a bit more reliable. Shame they are named so similarly though.

    You're right.

How Do You Make A Yonah MBP Run @ 2.33GHz? You Don't. It's Merom Inside.

I see that you misunderstood the context of the 2.33Ghz but you are still incorrect. You can buy a 2.33Ghz Yonah today, its called the T2700. I know there are not any T2700's in a MBP but Apple could have done so if they wanted.

Now, back to your 1.67X Battery life…

Straight from a "Merom vs. Yonah" AnandTech article (http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2808&p=15) released earlier today:

Here there's no difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo, which in the mobile world is important. If Intel isn't going to give us any more battery life, it had better not take any away.

In our final battery life test, the Core 2 Duo T7600 actually falls behind its Core Duo counterpart by 2 minutes, but the margin of error for battery life tests is usually at least 1%, so overall battery life is essentially identical.

    :)
